Tomato Trellis - Cedar Picket DIY Project

The inspiration for the project came because our tomato plants get so large they overwhelm our cheap tomato cages. We are hoping our giant tomato trellis system gives us a higher yield of tomatoes this year.

tomato trellis 1

To the this project completed you're going to need a table saw, miter saw, speed square, tape measure, pencil, nail gun, one inch brad nails and waterproof wood glue.

Brad Nails

Waterproof Glue

tomato trellis 2

The material for this project is going to be two cedar fence pickets and you can pick these up at your local home center. Two pickets will make one tomato trellis.

tomato trellis 3

Start by carefully ripping the two pickets into one inch strips. you should end up with eight total strips. Pull four of the strips aside and cut a forty-five degree angle at the bottom. This will help press the tomato trellis into the ground when it's time for the install. Cut the remaining four strips into eighteen inch lengths for the horizontal pieces.

tomato trellis 4

Now it's time for the assembly! Take two of the longer vertical strips and place a pencil mark every sixteen inches. This is where you'll attach the horizontal pieces. Now place a quarter size dollop of waterproof glue at each one of the pencil marks. Be generous with the glue, the tomato trellis will be outside in the sun and rain so it will need to be sturdy. Keep in mind, we are going for function with this project.

tomato trellis 5

Secure your horizontal pieces with one inch brad nails and when you finish you should have something that resembles a small ladder. Repeat this process with the other two vertical pieces and four more horizontal pieces to form the opposite side of the trellis.

tomato trellis 6

Tomato Trellis 8

Now attach four more horizontal pieces to one side of the ladder sections then add the second ladder to those horizontal pieces. Carefully rotate the trellis and add the last four horizontal pieces and you've complete the assembly.

tomato trellis 7

Firmly press the tomato trellis eight to ten inches into the ground and you're one step closer to having the best summer tomatoes.

Davis County Utah - 5 Great Things About Living Here

Davis County Utah is located just north of Salt Lake City and south of Ogden. It's home to Hill Air Force Base (HAFB) and several other top employers. There are several cities to choose from and the population is just over 300,000. Here are 5 great things about living in Davis County.

Number 5 is the weather.

Utah truly has the greatest snow on earth but it's not all snow all the time. The state is considered to be high desert so we have the benefit of experiencing all four seasons. In Davis County, our average hig temperatures range from the high thirties in December and January to the low nineties in July and August. We average 20-22 inches of rain a year and about 45 inches of snowfall.

We are better than the national average when it comes to annual sunny days. In Davis County we get 226 sunny days a year compared to the national average of 205.

Number 4 on the list is education.

There is only one school district in Davis County and it's called the Davis School District. We have 98 schools, 2,800 teachers and 73,000 students.

According to greatschools.org, 75% of the schools in the district are rated average or above average when compared to the other districts in the state. The student to teacher ratio is 24 to 1, 83% of the teachers have 3 or more years experience and 100% are state certified educators.

Number 3 on the list is variety of housing options.

Davis County has just over 116,000 dwelling units with nearly 80% of them owner occupied and 20% tenant occupied. The median home price was just over $330,000 with the median rental rate at $1,300/month. We have many $250,000 options and several million dollar options for buyers to choose from. There are several master planned communities with on-site amenities if that's what you're looking for and we also have large lot options if you prefer some space.

Number 2 on the list is the economy and employment.

Davis County has a strong economic backbone with the largest employer being Hill Air Force Base. In addition to the federal payroll, the base employs thousands of private contractors. Davis County is also home to the Freeport Center where you'll find thousands of manufacturing, distribution and food service jobs. Bestplaces.net reported the median family income at $83,850.

Number 1 on the list is outdoor recreation.

Davis County has many outdoor sports and recreation options. We have the Wasatch Mountains to the east where you'll find trails for hiking, biking, horseback riding and more. We are within an hour's drive of 9 world class ski resorts. In March and April it's not uncommon to ski in the morning at Snowbasin and golf 9 holes in the afternoon.

To the west we have the Great Salt Lake and Antelope Island State Park where you can see bison, antelope, mule deer, coyotes, bighorn sheep, bald eagles, great horned owls and much more. We have the states largest amusement park in Davis County and there are several camping, fishing and hunting options tin the immediate area.

If you're looking to relocate to northern Utah or the Davis County Area we'd be happy to answer any questions you have.

Window Screen Repair - How To

To get this project done you're going to need a spline roller. This is a special tool that has a plastic or metal wheel on both ends of the handle. You will also need a large flat head screwdriver, scissors, and a straight edge razor. A large flat table will also come in handy.

window screen repair 1

Here's some links for the tools you'll need:

Spline Roller

Screwdriver

Razor Blades

Scissors

Folding Table

window screen repair 2

They make a variety of different screen material depending on the application. I purchased a large roll of fiberglass replacement screen. The large roll measures 48 inches by 84 inches and depending on the size of the screen you can generally get 3 screens repaired out of one roll. Here's some links to material options:

Standard Replacement Screen

Replacement Screen for Excessive Sun

High Visibility Replacement Screen

Replacement Screen for Pets

window screen repair 3

To remove the old screen you need to remove the spline. Find the corner where the spline starts and ends. With a flat head screwdriver, carefully pull the end of the spline up and pull it out of the channel. You will will be reusing the spline so clean it with a paper towel. I've found that cleaning it helps it go back into the channel a little easier. With the spline removed you can pull out the old screen materials and throw it away.

Window Screen Repair 4

Open the packaging and roll out the new material over the screen frame. Carefully trim it to be about two inches larger on all sides. Keep in mind you are going to use the excess material to repair additional screens so don't trim the material to be too large.

window screen repair 5

After trimming the material it will be easier to work with if you flip the material so the curl is facing down. Begin installing the spline by starting in a corner. Use the spline roller with the concave wheel to get the spline started and carefully push the spline into place. At this point it doesn't need to be perfectly in place because you will come back around the spline with the convex wheel to finish it.

window screen repair 6

Trim the excess spline with the scissors and use the flat head screwdriver to carefully push in the spline at each corner. Now take the convex wheel on the spline roller and press the spline into place. When the spline is properly installed it should rest below the screen frame. If you have a difficult spot or two you can use the screwdriver to force the spline into place. Be careful, you don't want the screwdriver to slip off the spline and damage the frame of the screen.

Window screen repair 7

With a sharp utility knife or razor blade, trim the excess screen material against the frame and you're all done!

Insulate Garage Door - How To

To get this project done you're going to need a four foot or longer straight edge, a tape measure, a sharpie marker, and a hand saw. A pair of saw horses or large table will come in handy to help keep you work surface elevated.

Tools & Materials

4' Straight Edge:

Tape Measure:

Sharpie Marker:

Hand Saw:

Saw Horses:

Owens Corning Insulation Kits:

I started with estimating how much material I was going to need by drawing out a quick sketch of the back of may garage door. This also came in handy for determining material cuts.

insulate garage door 3

I ran to my local home center and picked up four, 4' by 8' sheets of one and a half inch styrofoam insulation with aluminum backing. The aluminum acts as a reflecting agent while the foam reduces the transfer of the heat and cold. I set up my saw horses and got to work. Once I gathered all my tools and picked up my material, this project took me about an hour and a half including cleanup.

insulate garage door 4

Using the dimensions from my sketch, I marked my first cut and slowly cut the foam with my hand saw. The more narrow your saw blade the less cleanup you'll have. Most likely, you'll need to make two cuts per panel. Once you have your first piece cut, it's time to install.

insulate garage door 5

The vertical measurement should be about one inch longer than the opening so the panel will stay in place without adhesive or fasteners. If you cut the pieces correctly you should be able to slide the top in first and then the bottom will drop into place. Make sure you install the panels with the aluminum backing facing the interior of the garage. The backing is designed to reflect radiant heat back into the garage during the winter and the insulation is designed to block heat transfer during the summer.

insulate garage door 7

This upgrade to your garage door probably has minimal energy saving value but the insulation will keep your garage from large temperature swings during the summer and winter. The total cost for this project was less than $100 and I would rate it as easy on the project difficult scale.

Nest Thermostat E Review

The Nest Thermostat E is a game changer when it comes to smart thermostats. It can be programmed to your personal preferences and with the motion detection it knows when the home is vacant and goes into Eco Mode. When in Eco Mode the temperature will rise or fall to a preset level giving you the opportunity to save on heating and cooling costs when you're away. This thermostat is great for your personal home, rental units and short term rental properties. The thermostat connects to your WiFi so you can control it from your mobile device. We've had this thermostat for several years and it's great. Nest sends us a usage report each month so we can see how we're doing. The programable feature allows us to let our home get cool at night during the winter but it turns the system on before we get up so our home is nice and warm.

Hoover Linx Cordless Vacuum Review

At the beginning of last year we bought a new rug for our kitchen and we noticed right away that it caught all the crumbs and debris. The vacuum we had was overkill and destroyed the binding on the rug we had just replaced. We immediately started looking for a light-weight, cordless vacuum that's easy to get out and manageable for all family members. We ended up getting serious about finding a good one and ended up getting the Hoover Linx Signature Cordless Vacuum. We ended up liking it so much that we gave one away in a random drawing. It's been almost a year and we still love it. It's easy to manage and is great for our kitchen rug, hardwood floors and bathrooms. Since we gave one away we've had several friends request more information about the vacuum we bought. If you're looking for a great cordless vacuum, we'd recommend the Hoover Linx Signature.

This review video has all the details and rates the Hoover against other cordless vacuums.
